Smart Rods
Intelligent tools for the teachers of tomorrow.
Educational tools that make abstract ideas tangible.
In recent years researchers have shown growing interest in enhancing education through digital technologies. This project investigates the improvements software can bring to classroom activities using Cuisenaire rods. Teachers familiar with the Cuisenaire method were interviewed to formulate design specifications and to obtain feedback at various stages.
The product was implemented as a web application written in Python and JavaScript that communicates with 'smart' Cuisenaire rods, physical or virtual. It lets teachers monitor pupils in real time and provides statistics on their performance. In future the application could support different types of exercises and become a standalone mobile app for children to use at home.
